Hi Claire,
I was looking at the schedule and wonder why there is a day in switzerland and later a stop in zurich after rome....If you can eeek another day out of the schedule, a suggestion is Lake Constance or Heidleberg or Munich close to Zurich.
another suggestion is take overnight trains so you can sleep on the train versus getting a room.
